First thing this morning, I got up and went for a run! Woo hoo! I am NOT a morning person at all, so much so that I will sleep in until I only have 15 minutes to get dressed, get ready and eat breakfast. Confession: I love my bed and I love to sleep in, more than just about anything!
This morning, somehow I did it. Today I ran 2 miles in 30 minutes. Woo!
Meg's Thoughts
Motivation is choosing what you want MOST. You might say " I don't have motivation" to workout.
You do. You just may be more motivated to stay in bed than to get up and go for a run. Your desire for comfort and rest is prioritized higher than exercise. It comes down to choosing what is MOST important to you.
So, write down what is most important to you. Do it. Do it right now. I'll wait.
You probably wrote down your family as number one. Or your faith. Then your dog? Then maybe you chose your job? House? Health?
Now, write down your goals as pertains to what is most important to you. Maybe you didn't put your health on the top 3 of your list, but you probably did put your family. What do you want for yourself as it pertains to them? Do you want to have kids? See them graduate and get married? Grow old with your spouse?
Are your goals more important? Is your health more important? Or is satiating the lazy desire to stay in bed more important?
It's really important in life to have goals. One of my top goals is to be healthier and make healthier choices so that my life will be better better because of them. I want to have kids, I want to live a long & healthy life and the only way to do that is to really buckle down and focus on my health. And to do that I have to give up other, less important things that I like doing (like sleeping in). If I use sleeping in as an excuse perhaps saying that I'll I need to make sure I get eight hours of rest, that's a poor excuse. I need to take responsibility for when I decide to go to sleep also. Find go to sleep at midnight and have to wake up at 8 o'clock and and then forced to sleep in just so that I can have a hours of sleep, I need to go to bed earlier, and not purposefully go to bed later so that I have that as an excuse. That leads us to…
Today's tip of the day
Get up and workout first thing, before your brain realizes what you're doing. Simple. Make a date with yourself the night before, set your workout clothes out where you can quickly grab them and throw the on, and then do it. Get up, get out of bed, get dressed and go work out. This is a great rule of thumb because if you can implement this tip, you get your workout done first thing, jumpstart your metabolism, and you get your workout done and out of the way. Then you can spend the rest of the day focusing on your regular activities.
If you have a hard time making yourself get up and work out normally it really does help to just have a good conversation with yourself the night before. If you have everything else set up for success a.k.a. your clothes and shoes set out, ipod charged with headphones nearby, etc. then you have no excuses. Before you go to bed, say: "tomorrow I will get up and work out first thing. It's a great idea self, you need to do it! Just think, do it first thing and then you won't have to remember to do it later, or make yourself do it after you get off work when you are too tired. It will be done. I am going to do it first thing tomorrow."
I know it may sound silly, but sometimes just literally saying out loud "I am going to do ______ this" right before you go to bed helps you to remember what your plan is the next day, so that when your brain is foggy in the morning, you remember your date with yourself, and go do it!
I invite you to try it and tell me what you think. Tell me if it works for you or not. Tell me what you do to get yourself motivated in the morning.
I had to implement that tecnique with myself and it worked! And My biggest goal is that I want to have a healthy body and live a long life, and the best way to do that is to get my stinking butt out of bed, work out and get into the habit of making smart, balanced choices with food.
